The brief
A contemporary townhouse garden with a rendered raised border, slatted timber fencing and existing pleached trees. The aim was to soften the hard landscaping with a planting scheme that felt modern, architectural and full of movement.
The planting
Tall, airy plants such as Verbena bonariensis and Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ rise through the scheme, while Agapanthus ‘Amourette Blue’ and Echinacea ‘Alba’ provide strong summer colour.
Euphorbia ‘Miner’s Merlot’ introduces rich burgundy foliage, balanced by the bronze movement of Anemanthelelessoniana and softer flowering from Geranium ‘Rozanne’, Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ and Hylotelephium ‘Cherry Tart’.
A succession of crocuses, narcissi, tulips and alliums extends the display from early spring into summer.
Design approach
The planting was designed to contrast with the clean lines of the townhouse and raised border. Repeated groups create a simple contemporary rhythm, while grasses and taller perennials soften the surrounding architecture and pleached trees.
The palette moves between cool blues, purples and whites, punctuated by burgundy foliage and warm grasses, giving the border depth and interest throughout the season.
