Corten & Canopy

The brief

A newly landscaped contemporary garden with narrow planting beds, gravel, timber decking and black fencing. The aim was to soften the hard landscaping, create privacy and vertical interest, and establish a planting scheme that would feel lush despite the restricted bed space.

The planting

A multi-stem Amelanchier × lamarckii provides the main focal point, bringing spring blossom, soft foliage and autumn colour above Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and airy grasses.

Along the boundaries, bespoke steel mesh panels create a framework for Trachelospermum jasminoides, with Wisteria sinensis trained up a pergola post to eventually form a flowering canopy overhead.

Below, Brunnera ‘Mr Morse’, Veronicastrum ‘Diana’, Molinia ‘Heidebraut’, Polystichum ‘Herrenhausen’ and Geranium ‘Rozanne’ create a layered mix of foliage, flowers and movement within the narrow borders.

Design approach

The design uses vertical space as much as the ground, allowing climbers, grasses and taller perennials to build layers without overwhelming the compact garden. Rusting steel mesh and corten edging connect the planting to the hard landscaping, while the black fence provides a strong backdrop for fresh green foliage and white flowers.

As the climbers mature, the structure will gradually soften, creating a more enclosed, leafy garden beneath the existing canopy.
