The Victorian Border

The brief

A front border outside a Victorian house, designed to feel neat and structured while still offering strong seasonal interest.

The planting

A low hedge of Euonymus japonicus ‘Green Spire’ creates a crisp evergreen framework and was chosen as a reliable alternative to traditional box.

Behind it, a repeated hedge of Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ provides generous summer flowers and a strong backdrop through the season.

In spring, while the Hydrangeas are still cut back and beginning to regrow, white daffodils and soft pink tulips fill the border with colour before the main summer display takes over.

Design approach

The scheme was designed around succession, using evergreen structure to keep the border defined year-round while bulbs and Hydrangeas take turns providing the main seasonal display. The simple repeated planting also complements the formal character of the Victorian frontage.
